Torrance : Another Kid From Akron
Torrance: Music is Therapy
For independent artist Torrance, music isn’t just sound it’s survival. Born in Akron, Ohio and raised in Blue Rapids, Kansas, he grew up in a place he describes as “a lot of broken dreams, drugs, and no ambition.” That reality, combined with personal battles, has shaped him into the artist he is today.
“I think the biggest challenge for myself and probably a lot of other independent artists is getting your music in front of new listeners and getting them to listen in,” Torrance shares. “There’s a lot of hard work put into this stuff, and it’s nice to see an audience build up who respect the vision and the passion behind the music.”
For Torrance music is more than a grind its therapy. Living with schizophrenia in an environment where mental health struggles often aren’t respected, he found healing through his craft. “Music is therapy to me… seeing people relate to what we’re going through and what we’ve been through means a lot. It makes me feel like we aren’t really alone, you know?”
That authenticity is why he chose to perform under his real name. While he once went by “T-Dog” during an NF-inspired era, his transition to boombap beats and a more grounded style called for a change. “Changing my name to Torrance felt right. I feel like using my actual name shows people that I’m real, and what I talk about in my music is exactly what goes on behind the mic in my life.”
His sound is steeped in hip-hop’s roots, and his inspirations reflect that. His current top five? J. Cole, older Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, Logic, and Jay-Z. As he puts it, “Everybody’s got their place in the industry, but when it comes to this generation’s rap, I don’t listen to a lot of it the sounds and effects are just too much for my brain to handle.”
Torrance has already opened up about his hometown on tracks like “WELCOME TO BLUE RAPIDS” from his project NOTHING IN THIS WORLD CAN STOP ME, but his next wave of releases takes things even further. His upcoming EP Soul Sessions and winter album Paradise Blue have been years in the making. “These two albums mean a lot to me… seeing them come together is amazing. I can’t wait for y’all to hear what’s to come.”
Recently, Torrance has also connected with Artist Outlook’s Song Wars, an experience he describes as both fun and inspiring. “Honestly, pretty chill. I’ve been connecting with a lot of different people and artists… it’s dope to see new talent and be around people who share the same mindset.”
With his unfiltered approach, lived experiences, and passion for truth, Torrance is building something real proof that even in a small town full of broken dreams, music can be the spark that pushes you forward.
